Bakhtin elaborates upon Rabelais and Goethe; but how does the early eighteenth century, with Defoe, Richardson and Fielding among others, fit into this perception? In an unfinished essay on the Bildungsroman, ‘The Bildungsroman and Its Significance in the History of Realism (Toward a Historical Typology of the Novel)’, Bakhtin presents one of his typologies of the novel.
